Build a Wooden Garden Shed? 5 Tips To Get Started
Monday, November 9, 2009
If you have a shed in your back yard , life is so much easier. Storing and organizing all of your gardening tools, power tools along with mulch, garden soil and fertilizers makes it more pleasurable when you are working around in the garden. Also, the space you get by moving all those extra things from your garage.
Before beginning your shed here are some tips.
1.Do I need a permit?
This should be step one, after your decision on where to build your shed. Permits are known to take a very long time so remember this and get it out of the way. What if I did it without a permit? You probably could but I would not recommend it. Just get one if needed and do it the right way in case of future problems.
2.What is my skill level?
How are you at building things? If you are trying to build something above your skill level, it can be a really frustrating project. If you want to go beyond your own threshold, hire someone for the shed building project.
3.What type and size should I make the shed?
It is recommended that you really thing through the size aspect. You are most likely only going to build this one time, so it is usually a good idea to put some thinking into it. Remember, you want to have this for years to come. What about a wooden shed over a metal shed? People tend to notice that a wooden shed looks more classy and tends to blend in with your garden and your home. You can also paint it eventually if you wish to better match different colors around the house.
4.Is a Blueprint necessary?
There are many plans on the internet for how to build a shed. Some can be expensive, others are cheap... Is a plan needed to show me step by step how to lay out the work? Something that is easily readable on the supplies needed? How about pictures and videos to guide me? Or just the actual blueprint itself? Before buying a plan, make sure it fits your needs.
5.How about the tools required for the job?
If you do not have the right tools, a nightmare can occur. You can always rent power tools from a local hardware store or even a friendly neighbor.
If you plan before you begin this project, you already have an advantage of doing this right with little to zero mistakes. Get all of the supplies in the beginning, talk to that "friendly neighbor", do a little research on hiring good people if necessary, invite some friends over to help and reward them with a little barbecue on the grill after wards, who knows, maybe you can turn your shed building experiment into a fun party!
